CUTTING THE FIRST STEEL PANEL

THE MERAVIGLIA BECOMES A SHIP BUILT FOR THE FUTURE

“Meraviglia”, or “Wonder” in English, is the feeling of being amazed when we see something new, extraordinary or unimaginable. Cutting the first piece of steel at the STX shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France, for MSC Meraviglia, the new MSC Cruises flagship.

Close to marvels like the Colosseum or the Eiffel Tower, amongst the skyscrapers of Dubai or looking up at the Christ of Corcovado, all you can do is gasp in wonder. It is astounding to think of all the masterpieces the human race and its creative genius have been able to produce. This sentiment is the essence and inspiration for the traditional steel-cutting ceremony which kicks off the construction of MSC Meraviglia, the new MSC Cruises flagship that is to be launched in spring 2017.

MSC Meraviglia is a sophisticated combination of state-of-the-art-technology, a love of the sea, design, comfort and practicality. It is a ship that will dazzle her travellers.

MSC Meraviglia will be able to dock at any cruise port around the world, expanding your choice of itineraries and destinations: a huge added bonus for any traveller. Every season will be perfect with our new layout of internal and external areas. The luxury MSC Yacht Club area will be expanded. The whole ceiling of the inside promenade will be covered with a giant 480-m² LED screen: a digital sky, capable of transmitting vistas, events, sunrises, sunsets and the starry skies at night. Entertainment areas have been multiplied: there’s a fun park and a water park, breathtaking panoramic areas and two covered promenades.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, tells us “We have chosen a name that evokes the sense of awe and wonder felt upon discovering the innovative and practical features that are part of the unique style of MSC Cruises. This ship will unite the know-how of a young and daring company such as MSC Cruises, with 300 years of maritime experience, with the experience of one of the most avant-garde shipyards in the world.”

The Vista project is becoming a reality with the construction of MSC Meraviglia. Along with the Seaside ships – which bring the fun of a waterfront experience to the cruise – the Vista ships are the next generation of ships for the future. “Seven new ships make a total investment of 5.1 billion euro and will double MSC Cruises’ capacity by 2022”, states Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises. “MSC Meraviglia will be one of the most eco-compatible ships, safer and more technologically advanced than any other ship in the cruise industry.”

MSC Meraviglia will not produce any liquid waste and will be able to neutralise its smoke and CO2 emissions. Energy efficiency will be guaranteed by the contours of the hull and the propulsion system. Laurent Castaing, the General Manager of STX France, also reminds us of this.

In 2017, during its first season, MSC Meraviglia will be the show piece of the Western Mediterranean with its home port in Genoa and the option to embark at Barcelona or Marseille.

Very soon, pre-booking will be available for your cruise. In the meantime, visitors can enjoy an exclusive fully immersive, virtual reality experience at the MSC Cruises stand at the Milan Expo 2015, for the first marvellous taste of life on board.
